Jan. 28 Facebook Threat is a Fake

Word spread this morning that hacktivist group Anonymous had planned a massive onslaught against Facebook, to be carried out on January 28, 12:00 AM EST, as a YouTube claiming to be from the group circulated the Web.

But fear not, Facebookers. A Twitter account reliably associated with Anonymous has claimed that the YouTube, and the accompanying claim of a Facebook attack, are both fake.

"While it is true that Facebook has at least 60,000 servers, it is still possible to bring it down," the threatening video said. Also cited in the video, in the way of reasoning for the supposed Anonymous attack, was the recent controversial legislation, the Stop Online Piract Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA), though why these now-defunct bills would prompt the group to attack Facebook is anyone's guess.

Facebook had come out against SOPA/PIPA, though it did not join with Wikipedia, Reddit, and others in the blackout protest of the legislation.

Perhaps these Anonymous pretenders thought Facebook's endorsement wasn't ringing enough? But did they see Mark Zuckerberg's first Tweet since 2009, an anti-SOPA message that linked to a longer message on his own Facebook page? Apparently, they weren't impressed.

No matter. It's all a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing, as the threats have been disavowed by the AnonOps Twitter account, which has been regularly associated as an informal spokesperson for the group. "Again we must say that we will not attack #Facebook! Again the mass media lie," said AnonOps.

Anonymous recently staged its most widespread hacking attack ever, taking down the public websites of the US Justice Department, the Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA), the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA), Universal Music Group, the US Copyright Office, EMI Music, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), among others.

The attack was in response to the arrest of four execs and operators of popular file-sharing site MegaUpload.

Similar threats to take down Facebook, supposedly from Anonymous, emerged in 2011, claiming that the social networking site would be attacked on November 5. These threats similarly proved fruitless, as the group eventually claimed that core members of the group were not behind them.

And for their part, Facebook doesn't seem too worried. "We expect Anonymous just like we expect any other attack on any other day," said a Facebook rep in a C-Net report Tuesday. "Facebook has always been committed to protecting our users' information, and we will continue to innovate and work tirelessly to defend this data."

So it looks like your blurry Facebook pics of last week's Maragrita Night are safe from Anonymous for now.( http://vator.tv/news )

‘Arroyo well, She can be moved to jail or not’

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is well enough to leave the hospital, according to the head of the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC).

“She can be moved to a jail or not. She is stable and has no active medical problem,” VMMC director Dr. Nona Legaspi told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a telephone interview.

Keeping her in the hospital is “not our decision. Ms. Arroyo did not come to us as a voluntary patient but because of a court order,” Legaspi said.

She said she would recommend to the court that the former President could obtain any further treatment as an “outpatient.”

She explained that the therapy Arroyo was undergoing for her bone ailment could be done outside the hospital.

“Whatever should have been done for her for her ailment was already done at St. Luke’s. She can be an outpatient now,” she said.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had earlier filed a motion in the Pasay City court hearing the electoral sabotage case against Arroyo seeking an update on her medical condition.

Up to the court

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the poll agency believed Arroyo was already well and could be transferred to a regular jail facility.

“We asked the court to summon the director of the VMMC or the attending physicians of Ms Arroyo to manifest before the court her present condition and declare why it’s necessary for her to stay at the VMMC.

“If it’s no longer necessary, then we will respectfully pray for the issuance of an order directing the Philippine National Police and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to transfer and commit her to a regular detention facility designated by the court,” Jimenez said.

Asked what had prompted the Comelec to request a report on Arroyo’s condition, he replied: “Actually, we already knew about it (her recovery) for quite a while. In fact, didn’t she request to stand and walk out of her room and walk to the chapel? Basically, all indications were that she was getting better. In fact, she was already walking around so she’s well and maybe it’s no longer necessary that she be held in a hospital.”

Jimenez said it would be up to the Pasay City Regional Trial Court where to transfer Arroyo.

The Comelec motion was signed by Commissioner Christian Robert Lim, whom Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. had designated to oversee the case, together with law department Director Esmeralda Ladra, division chief Maria Juana Valeza and other election lawyers.

Save on hospital bill

The Comelec said transferring Arroyo, now a Pampanga representative, would “save much needed government funds being expended for maintaining her in a hospital suite.”

Arroyo was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism, a disorder in the parathyroid indicated by a low production of hormones. Relative to the disease is another bone ailment called cervical spondylosis which severely weakened a portion of her spine.

She spent months in luxurious St. Luke’s Medical Center at Bonifacio Global City where doctors performed three operations to correct the alignment of her spine and repair a dislodged metal plate which was part of the treatment.

Arroyo has been accused of ordering the rigging of the senatorial race in Maguindanao province in 2007.

Her coaccused include former Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr., former Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr. and former provincial election supervisor Lintang Bedol.

Arroyo purportedly ordered Ampatuan to ensure that all 12 administration senatorial candidates won in his province, which despite its improbability was what occurred. )

Fake "Angry Birds" Game - Avast Detects Malware (Android Users)

Android users, be very careful: a new batch of malicious apps posing as popular games – including the massively popular “Angry Birds” – has invaded the Android Market.

Computer security firm Avast said the apps, published by developer Miriada Production, may send expensive SMS messages to premium numbers, at the users’ expense.

In a blog post, Avast said Google removed these malicious apps from the Android Market, but only after it alerted it to their presence.

Yet it said this was not the first time a batch of malicious apps managed to enter the Android Market.

“Apps published by the developer Miriada Production may look like well known Android games (Angry Birds, Need for Speed, World of Goo and others) and users could be easily confused,” it noted.

Worse, Avast said if someone tried to look for “Cut the rope free,” one of the malicious applications was in the fourth place in the search results.

It added that while there are many signals that an app like this is a fraud – such as asking permission to send an SMS, less experienced users may not be able to see this as clearly.

Downloading package

Avast said the malicious app, once installed, starts to download a package from a remote server.

While the package contains a real game, the app is sending a SMS to a premium rate number.

“One interesting facet is that there is a different number for many countries in Europe, so it does not target Russian only. For example, within the Czech Republic, the SMS is sent to number 9090199 which charges about €4. In other countries, the amount charged is usually a bit less,” it said.

The app distinguishes between these countries based on their ISO and nearly 20 individual countries are affected – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Czech Republic, Germany, Estonia, France, United Kingdom, Georgia, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Latvia, Poland, Russian Federation, Tajikistan and Uganda.

Avast detects this kind of malware as Android:RuFraud and users of avast! Free mobile security are already protected, it said.

Pacquiao Won't Lose Sleep if Floyd Says 'No'

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao is not losing sleep over Floyd Mayweather Jr. rejecting his offer of a 50-50 split of the fight purse.

“Okay lang. May iba pa namang fights (It’s okay. There are other fights),” said Pacquiao, who had hoped for a positive response from Mayweather.

Pacquiao said a couple of nights ago Mayweather called him on the phone, and they discussed the possibility of staging the superfight in May or June.

During their two-minute conversation, which must have felt like an hour for both fighters, Pacquiao told Mayweather they should do the fight under a 50-50 basis.

Sana matuloy na nga (I hope it pushes through),” he told The STAR.

But the undefeated American, who will go to jail in June regardless of whom he fights next, has reportedly thumbed down Pacquiao’s golden offer.

Many think it’s the best way to do the fight, with both superstars getting just as much as the other – fair and square.

Mayweather, however, has other things in mind. He thinks he’s better than Pacquiao, and deserves more than the Filipino champion in eight weight classes.

“He asked about a 50/50 split and I told him no, that can’t happen,” Sportscenter quoted Mayweather as saying.

Mayweather must have made up his mind that if he doesn’t get more than Pacquiao, then he’d fight someone else, for a much, much lesser price.

“But what can happen is you (Pacquiao) can make more money fighting me than you have made in your career,” Mayweather apparently told Pacquiao over the phone.

“I also let him know I’m in control on my side but he needs to get on the same page as his promoter so we can make this fight happen,” Sportscenter also wrote.

Pacquiao wouldn’t budge either. He said 50-50 is it, nothing more, nothing less. Or he fights someone else as well.

“I’ve chosen my next opponent,” said Pacquiao.

And the name of that chosen one will soon be announced by Bob Arum once the legendary promoter finally gives up on the Mayweather fight.

It could be Miguel Cotto up next for Pacquiao even if Juan Manuel Marquez, Tim Bradley and Lamont Peterson are in the mix or used to be in the mix.

If Pacquiao takes on Cotto on June 9, the eve of the Puerto Rico Day parade, Arum said it may take place at the Thomas and Mack Center or the MGM.

Arum had said Pacquiao vs Mayweather can happen late in May or June 9 in Las Vegas. Otherwise, both fighters have to move on, and hope they end up doing the fight in November.

Arum is sick and tired of people saying he’s the one who doesn’t want the fight to happen.

“I’m not stopping any fight. This is all for public relations, it’s nonsense. Arum’s blocking the fight and so on, it’s just ridiculous. What’s going on is not rational,” Arum told boxing scribe Michael Marley .

“This is not the normal way you put together a big fight. The normal way would be for us to sit down somewhere. Mayweather said he won’t agree to a 50-50 split with Manny. Now that’s something blocking the fight, something we won’t agree to,” the Top Rank chief added.

Pacquiao is giving Mayweather his best offer, at 50-50, but again, he won’t lose sleep if it doesn’t come along. He’s not the one going to jail anyway. - By Abac Cordero (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)
